The Wild Columbines are one of my favorite wildflowers. They are so beautiful. It's name comes from the Latin word "columbo" , meaning white doves. If you look at the red one, you can see more clearly how it appears to be doves, with the long nectar tubes being their necks.
The white one is very rare. This one was in my garden, but it did not reseed. The red and yellow ones are most commonly found in Texas.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote of the White Columbine: "O Columbine, open your folded wrapper, where two twin doves dwell."
"And JESUS, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. And so a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Matthew 3:16-17
