Underground Railroad Quilt Codes Helping Slaves to Escape, Given by Joyce Hewitt

Slaves were not allowed to learn to read or write, so they had to come up with other means of signals to the ones escaping. They used beautiful quilts. The quilts were hung over fences or on clothes lines, anywhere that they could be seen by those trying to escape. Each block had a meaning giving direction to the escapees. I have listed a few, but there are many more. If you Google "Underground Railroad Quilt Codes" there is lots of information about this and amazing details. This was so very interesting and I know it was enjoyed by all.

Thank you Joyce, job well done!
