The flower for August is the Poppy. Poppies have been documented as far back as 5,000 B.C. in Mesopotamia. They have even been found in Egyptian tombs. In ancient times they believed the Poppy was named for the Greek god Demeter, their god of fertility and agriculture. It was their belief that if Poppies were planted in with their crops they would have a bountiful crop.

The Poppy today symbolizes "Happiness". The Red Corn Poppy is also a symbol of the American Veteran. There are many colors of poppies, the lavender one is called Paupeur Poppy.
